Serial Killer in TV Serial!!!

Hey Folks,

This being my first blog I request all of you not to have expectations of any sort. This topic might not suit your taste buds, just a word of caution in the beginning....

It was way back in 1997-98 when the TV serials, aired on the newly introduced satellite channels, were gaining thumping popularity in Chennai. Television viewers were very new at that time to the Mega Serial concept. The satellite channels faced huge challenge in churning out Serials which would appeal to the then intelligent viewer. If a serial crosses 50-60 episodes successfully it will be termed as a Mega Serial. It was during this time the tamil small screen audiences were treated to some good, riveting and interesting TV serials. One among them was "MARMA DESAM".

Marma Desam, meaning Mysterious Land in Tamil, is a collection of short stories penned by Indra Soundarajan, a Tamil Novelist. These short stories were then made into a television series under the title "Marma Desam" with each story having a title. This was directed by Naga. All the stories majorly dealt with religion, super natural occurrences and extra sensory perception. Some of the main stories in this were:

1. Rahasiyam (Secret)
2. Vidathu Karuppu (Most popular among them)
3. Sorna Reghai (Golden Palmlines)
4. Vaanathu Manithargal

Each one of the above had riveting story line which made viewers hooked to the television sets. Vidathu karuppu (VK), which was aired on Sun TV, was the second part of the thrilling Marma Desam series. This was one of the very few serials which attracted even the younger generation. I still remember those days when I used to discuss the story with friends in school. Since this was aired once a week we had to wait seven long days to see the next episode. Totalling to 84 episodes, each episode had scenes from the past and the present the connection though was revealed only towards the end of the 84 episodes. More often than not each episode would end in such a way leaving you flummoxed. The thing that i liked about VK was that the natural performance of the lead characters. In fact almost every character had a vital nexus to the main story, especially the old lady character. Whenever this character appears on screen i used to hide myself and watch. Another thing i liked was the way the director maintained the pace. Towards the end the story got even more exciting especially with the last 10 episodes when the "karuppu" character gets exposed.

A few days back i got a chance to see some of the episodes of Vidathu Karuppu. I was hooked completely. It was then i realized as to why I was so attracted to this. VK had the biggest viewership then and was voted the number one serial.

If you are a tamilian, Vidathu Karuppu is a must watch series. It is even more gripping to see it now as it was a decade ago.

SEE YOU ALL SOON WITH MY NEXT BLOG!!!
